National Multistate Tax Services Manager at Deloitte Tax LLP: Michael has a long and rich history of non-profit organizational development and strategic planning. While in college, Michael helped found and lead several campus organizations working with children in underserved communities and encouraging college students to participate in civic engagement.
After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis in 1996, Michael moved west to work with community-based organizations. In Idaho, Michael helped rebuild a statewide non-profit that distributed over a million pounds of donated food annually to low-income families through an all-volunteer network. Michael helped build relationships between white, Native American, and Latino families across rural communities to successfully advance statewide economic and health care reforms. In California, Michael worked at a national policy institute consulting and coordinating with community-based organizations across the country to advance innovative policy solutions to help increase economic and educational opportunities and reduce health disparities for low-income communities of color.
After observing the unique challenges small non-profits face in financial management and internal controls, Michael pursued an MBA in Accounting at California State University East Bay and is a licensed CPA in California and Illinois. Michael returned to Chicago in 2010 to start a family and is currently helping businesses collaborate with state and local communities on economic development projects.
Raised in a family of teachers and married to an elementary school teacher, Michael shares the B2SI’s passion for education. “Studies have shown that the average teacher spends $350 per year on school supplies for their students,” notes Michael. He is committed to ensuring that, “whether its school supplies or a healthy breakfast and lunch, all children should have the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and in life.”
