Third Time Is A Charm As Day Proves To Be A Winner
It became clear early on in the day that returning to the Broadway Armory Park as the host site of our biggest event of the year was the right move. With the support of the Chicago Park District staff, great volunteers and our community partners, the YMCA of Metro Chicago and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago, it was our the best ever.
In fact, we were able to unloaded three semi trucks full of our Back 2 School kits in record time. Then, our volunteers turned around and load up buses, trucks, and vans headed to 50 YMCA locations to bring the kits back to their facilities for distribution, also in record time. In less than 7 hours we distributed 12,000 kits. That’s 360,000 school supplies in one day!
While all this was going on we also entertained and educated 400 children from area YMCAs and Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago with a series of activities and demonstrations including aerobics, science experiments, arts & crafts, a nutrition class, a live bee colony, and, new for this year, an exotic petting zoo featuring an alligator, tarantula, chinchilla, Fennic fox, hairless rats, and more.
We are grateful to our sponsors for their support including the Community Currency Exchange Association of Illinois, MB Financial Bank, Western Union Foundation, Kits for Kidz, Comcast/NBC/Universal, Republic Bank, Electronic License Service, and Community Financial Service Centers.
